Opened in the regenerated heart of Kings Cross. This amazing building was Britain’s first purpose-built gym and was the site for the indoor events at the first Olympic Games, held in London back in 1866. Long forgotten sports were practised here, including Indian club swinging and broadsword practice as well as the introduction of women’s exercise which was considered to be a forward-thinking approach at the time! The vast laminated timber roof trusses, with their original cast iron hooks from which budding Olympians swung from ropes, are still in place today.
Sitting in a prime spot between King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations, the most exciting emerging area of London, the German Gymnasium is a beautiful Grade II listed building which has one of only two surviving laminated timber roofs in London.
We have made the most of the stunning interior with its 57 foot floor- to-ceiling height. Sympathetically restored to its former glory, it is home to an elegant, contemporary restaurant and events venue boasting a Grand Café, Meister Bar, a vast outdoor terrace, a semi private dining room and two terraces.

Home of the first London Olympic games gymnasium, our breath-taking Kings Cross home is now a temple to German cuisine with the buzzing atmosphere of a traditional Grand Café. Our all day menu includes London’s finest schnitzels, sausages, seasonal delicacies and tortes. We can happily accommodate groups for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the evening, low key lighting creates an intimate, inviting and warm atmosphere for dining and drinks until the early hours.
