Creativity, Style & Theme (Max 300 words)

London Zoo’s Christmas parties are built around the idea of celebrating in spaces that are genuinely unexpected. Events take place across a mix of historic buildings and immersive animal houses, giving guests access to areas of the Zoo that are rarely experienced after hours. Drinks receptions in spaces such as Tiny Giants are particular highlights. Designed by Phil Wharmby and Mike Cousins at Wharmby Kozdon Architects, it was developed between 1997-99, with biodiversity conservation at its heart, and opened by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in 1999.
We dress our spaces in a classic, traditional festive style as a starting point, enhancing the character of each venue rather than overpowering it. From there, clients are given full creative freedom to make the event their own. London Zoo works exceptionally well as a canvas for theming, and we regularly collaborate with clients and production partners to deliver bold, immersive concepts. Past themes such as The Lion King, Safari, and In the Jungle have translated brilliantly into the setting, feeling natural to the environment rather than forced.
What makes our Christmas offering stand out is the ability to shape truly bespoke experiences. Private Zoo access, carefully planned guest journeys through historical animal houses, and tailored creative elements allow each event to feel personal and considered. Rather than offering a fixed package, we focus on building events around the space, the brief, and the story the client wants to tell — resulting in Christmas parties that are memorable, distinctive, and impossible to replicate elsewhere in London.

Atmosphere & Guest Experience (Max 300 words)

The festive atmosphere at London Zoo starts with arrival. Guests enter the Zoo after dark, immediately sensing they are somewhere out of the ordinary. Soft, atmospheric lighting is used across pathways and event spaces to create warmth and guide guests through the site, while highlighting the Zoo’s historic features, listed buildings and surroundings.
Décor is intentionally elegant and festive rather than over-styled, using greenery, seasonal accents, and soft lighting to create a welcoming Christmas feel. Music is carefully chosen to suit each stage of the event — relaxed during drinks receptions, then building energy later in the evening — helping the night flow naturally.
Guest experience is at the heart of how we deliver events. Our team focuses on pacing, comfort, and ease, making sure guests know where they need to be without feeling rushed or managed. Moments of surprise — such as glimpses into animal houses, unexpected routes through the Zoo, or exclusive after-hours access — are woven into the evening to create lasting memories.
The result is an atmosphere that feels festive, relaxed, and quietly magical, where guests are free to enjoy the setting, the company, and the experience without distraction.

Sustainability & Responsibility (Max 300 words)

Sustainability is central to how Christmas events are delivered at London Zoo and is supported by our on-site catering partner, Events by Benugo. As a conservation charity, responsibility is not an added extra for us — it shapes the way we operate every day.
Events by Benugo shares this approach, with a strong sustainability policy focused on seasonal sourcing, reducing waste, and making thoughtful choices across food and beverage delivery. Menus are designed around high-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients, with plant-forward options playing a key role alongside carefully selected meat and fish. All of our fruit and vegetable off cuts and unused garnish are given to our animals.
Across our events, we actively work to minimise waste through careful planning and efficient service. We never use single-use plastics and reusable materials are prioritised, with energy-efficient practices built into event delivery.
Crucially, every Christmas party hosted at London Zoo supports global conservation work, with at least 20% of all event spends going back directly into conservation, helping fund research and protection programmes for endangered species. For our clients and their guests, this means celebrating the festive season in a way that feels positive and purposeful — enjoying a great night while contributing to something that genuinely matters.

Food & Beverage (Max 300 words)

Food and drink are where the Christmas spirit really comes to life at London Zoo. Our festive menus are designed to feel generous, comforting, and unmistakably Christmassy — the kind of food and drink guests genuinely look forward to at the end of the year.
Classic seasonal tipples are a key part of the experience, from warming glasses of mulled wine or spiced cider on arrival to indulgent Baileys hot chocolates enjoyed during drinks receptions. Bars can be styled to suit the tone of the event, offering everything from sparkling wine and cocktails to carefully curated alcohol-free alternatives, ensuring everyone feels included in the celebration. Wherever possible, we encourage our clients to shop locally, utilising English wines and all of our house beer is Camden Hells.
When it comes to dining, guests can enjoy traditional Christmas favourites such as a beautifully cooked turkey roast with all the trimmings, served alongside equally thoughtful vegetarian, vegan, and dietary-specific options that never feel like an afterthought. Menus are flexible and can be adapted to suit seated dinners, relaxed bowl food, or sharing feasts, allowing the food to complement the flow of the evening.
Set within one of London’s most unexpected historic venues, festive food and drink take on an extra sense of occasion. Whether guests are raising a glass beneath listed historic ceilings or enjoying Christmas comfort food after exploring the Zoo, the result is a dining experience that feels welcoming, indulgent, and memorable.

Event Management & Service (Max 300 words)

Behind every Christmas event at London Zoo is a highly experienced events team focused on calm planning and smooth delivery. From first enquiry through to the event itself, clients are supported with clear communication, practical advice, and a collaborative approach.
Working within a unique and complex site requires careful coordination, and our team is well practised in managing guest flow, production, accessibility, and timings across multiple spaces. On the day, we take a hands-on but unobtrusive approach, working closely with suppliers and front-of-house teams to ensure everything runs seamlessly. When working in historical buildings, we have to also take into account valuable architecture and surroundings.
Service is thoughtful, professional, and attentive. Guests are made to feel welcome and well looked after, allowing hosts to relax and enjoy the celebration themselves. It’s this combination of experience, preparation, and genuine care that allows our Christmas parties to feel effortless, even in such an extraordinary setting.

Entertainment & Add-ons (Max 300 words)

Entertainment at London Zoo is designed to feel fun, engaging, and a little unexpected. Alongside DJs, live bands, and festive performers, we offer experiences that make full use of the Zoo setting.
Private after-hours access allows guests to explore selected areas of the Zoo during their event, adding a sense of exclusivity and discovery. Guided tours led by Zoo hosts are a popular option, offering relaxed, informal insights into the animals and the Zoo’s conservation work. For something more interactive, bespoke scavenger hunts encourage guests to move around the site, explore the surroundings, and engage with one another in a light-hearted way.
Many events choose to add an Animal House into their event, weather it be having breakfast and Penguin Beach or a drinks reception at Tiger Territory. All of our animal houses can be paired with a live animal feeding and talk by our experienced keepers. This addition to an event is invaluable to our uniqueness, and something we are very proud to be able to offer.
These elements are woven naturally into the event, either as part of a drinks reception, before dinner, or as a surprise moment rather than feeling bolted on. Entertainment can also be tailored to match event themes, helping bring each concept to life.

Why You Should Win (Max 300 words)

London Zoo offers a Christmas party experience that feels genuinely different, not because it relies on novelty, but because it brings together place, atmosphere, and storytelling in a way few venues can. Hosting a festive celebration within a historic London landmark, in surprisingly listed buildings with an abundance of history, creates an immediate sense of occasion, while the Zoo’s unique surroundings add layers of surprise and delight throughout the evening.
What sets our Christmas events apart is the balance we strike. Guests enjoy a festive ambiance with traditional styling and comforting seasonal food, alongside moments of discovery and creativity that make the night feel special rather than formulaic. Events are tailored to the client and the space, allowing each celebration to feel personal rather than packaged.
Behind the scenes, an experienced events team ensures everything runs smoothly, allowing hosts and guests to relax and enjoy the occasion. Importantly, every Christmas party held at London Zoo also supports our wider conservation work, giving the celebration an added sense of meaning.
It’s this combination of history, festive joy, thoughtful detail, and purpose (delivered in a way that feels natural and unforced) that makes London Zoo a distinctive and deserving contender for Best Historic Venue.
